ELASMOWEEK 2020: IRISH BASKING SHARK GROUP

September 2020

Elasmo Week is a yearly online program designed to highlight the diversity of sharks and the researchers who study them. The IBSG was invited to be part of this program in its very first year. In this 30 minute video, we share our entire story - from the group's inception to why and how we study basking sharks in Ireland. We feature our current team of researchers and educators, as well as basking shark footage compiled by both the IBSG and dedicated community scientists.

"CETORHINUS MAXIMUS": A POEM BY MARY O'MALLEY

REFLECTIONS ON A RARE BASKING SHARK ENCOUNTER

HOW DO YOU STUDY BASKING SHARKS?

April 2020

Dr. Simon Berrow, co-founder and researcher with the IBSG, provides valuable insight into the basking shark research process. To make these projects possible, the Irish Basking Shark Group works with numerous collaborators. For example, the slime sampling genetics work described here took place with the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, University of Aberdeen, Manx Basking Shark Watch, and the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom/University of Southampton. To learn more about this project, check out the peer-reviewed publication and media coverage. For information on the other research featured in this video, visit our project pages.

HOW DO YOU STUDY A SHARK YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT? | TEDx Dublin

March 2010

They're the second-largest fish in the world, they're almost extinct, and we know almost nothing about them. In this talk, Simon Berrow describes the fascinating basking shark ("great fish of the sun" in Irish), and the exceptional -- and wonderfully low-tech -- ways he's learning enough to save them.
