Tagged Shark Sighted off Tiree, Scotland

Amazingly one of the yellow visual Tags deployed off Malin head, Co. Donegal was re-sighted off Tiree, Scotland 26th June 2009, the tagged shark was recorded with one other shark, which was not tagged. The tag was deployed off Malin Head between the 1st and 3rd of June 2009 but at this stage the number on the tag is unknown. This is the first re- sighting of a visual tag outside of Irish waters and builds on the previous re- sightings recorded near Malin head and also off the coast of Cork.

Previous re-sightings have already given invaluable information on the movements and population of basking sharks in small-scale areas. A shark tagged off Cape Clear on Thursday 4th of June was re-sighted 11 days later at Castle point around 10km away from its original tagged position. Amazingly this was the only shark tagged in Cork and it was re-sighted! A tagged shark was also re- sighted with 5 untagged sharks at Dunaff head on Sunday the 14th of June.

No other sightings have been reported to date, this also gives a result and the Irish basking shark tagging team are simply delighted with the results that the 2009 season has produced so far.
